Colorado Mesa University is committed to making higher education affordable. We offer two different alternative tuition programs: Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) and Mountains and Plains (M&P). These are available for freshmen and transfer students based on the student's permanent address and GPA.

Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) and Mountains and Plains (M&P)

Freshmen and transfer students (up to 105 credit hours) with a permanent address from 32 states in the western and mid-western United States and the District of Columbia and a minimum GPA of 2.5 for both WUE and M&P are automatically considered for reduced tuition rates upon completion of the admissions process. There is no separate application process to be considered for WUE or M&P status.

How to Apply

To ensure consideration for these special tuition programs, complete your CMU application process as soon as possible. For a quicker response, apply for admission online. If you meet the following criteria, you are automatically considered for the tuition programs:

  • Permanent address from a participating state
  • High school student with 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA for WUE or M&P
  • Transfer student (up to 105 credits) with 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA for WUE or M&P
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S.

To continue receiving the benefits of the M&P or WUE Tuition Program once awarded, students agree to:

Enroll in and complete a minimum of 12 credit hours each consecutive fall and spring semester; for summer eligibility students must enroll in and complete a minimum of 6 credit hours; students must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA for M&P and WUE; and students must keep their state driver’s license to prove their ties to their home state.

Students are granted the special tuition program because they are a permanent resident of their home WUE or M&P state. As such, time accrued while participating in the tuition program cannot be used to establish domiciliary intent (12 month physical presence) for purposes of claiming Colorado residency. Students wishing to pursue Colorado in-state status for tuition purposes must notify the Tuition Classification Officer in writing of their desire to decline their tuition program. They would then be charged out-of-state tuition during the 12-month domiciliary period prior to the semester for which they petition for in-state status. Please call 970.248.1514 for further detail.

If all requirements are maintained, a student's tuition program will be available until they obtain their bachelor's degree or reach a maximum of 120 total credit hours. This program is available for undergraduate course work only. If maintenance requirements are not met, a student's tuition program will be cancelled. Tuition will be changed to out-of-state without further notice.

Freshmen with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2, and transfer students (up to 105 credit hours) with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, may be eligible for additional merit scholarship.
