Alaska to Colorado

November 14, 2016

Growing up I was always a little shy. I was worried about my professors and how I would be able to make friends in college. I quickly saw how friendly and nice everyone was at CMU and how easy it was to make friends! All of my professors are so nice and they want everyone to succeed. They encourage us to go and visit them during their office hours and not to be afraid to go to them when you’re struggling and need help!! On top of that, most of my class sizes are small! All of my fears have gone away, I realize now that CMU is my new home and I have finally found my Mavily.

Home for me use to be back in Anchorage, Alaska, (and still technically is) but I finally found my new home here at CMU. At first, being 3,258 miles away from my family was one of the hardest things I have ever decided to do. I missed the cold weather and seeing some sort of wildlife every time I walked out of a building. I wasn’t used to the 90-degree weather in August, I’m sure all of my friends were getting annoyed of my saying, “I think I’m melting to death” every time I walked outside. I get so many questions like “Why did you decide to come here?”, “Don’t you miss home?”, “Isn’t it always cold in Alaska?”. Whenever I hear these questions I always think to myself “Why wouldn’t I want to come here?”, “Why don’t I want to push myself to try new things and get out of my comfort zone?”. I quickly realized that CMU has so many great things to offer to me as a student!

Due to the fact that I live so far away, I wasn’t able to bring my car with me. I was so worried how I would get places like the mall, or even how I would be able to go on road trips! Thankfully, CMU has a great partnership with Enterprise. Students who go to CMU can rent an enterprise car for ONLY $5 an hour! The best part about that is that we don’t have to fill the car up with gas when we return it and we don’t even have to have our own insurance. If I didn’t want to rent a car, there’s still an option for me! Thursday – Saturday CMU hosts a program called MavRides. They are open from 9pm- 3am. All you have to do is call them and they’ll pick you up and drop you off practically anywhere you need to go, and it costs nothing! All of these things helped me face the fears of coming to college, and settle down with my new family. My new home.
